Mussenden Temple - Ireland's Most Dramatic Landmark
Perched on the edge of a 120-foot cliff above Downhill Beach, the Mussenden Temple is one of the most photographed and iconic landmarks in Ireland. This small circular library, inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Rome, was built in 1785 by Frederick Hervey, the Earl-Bishop of Derry, as a memorial to his cousin Frideswide Mussenden.
The temple's dramatic position, with the wild Atlantic crashing below and sweeping views towards Donegal, has made it an enduring symbol of Northern Ireland's stunning coastline.

Mussenden Temple features:
- Circular domed structure modelled on Roman temples
- Latin inscription from Lucretius around the dome

- Later used as a Mass house during Penal times

- 7 miles of golden sand stretching to Castlerock
- Popular with walkers, horse riders, and kite surfers
- Land-yachting and beach activities
