The Sperrins - Wild Beauty

The Sperrin Mountains form Northern Ireland's largest and least-explored mountain range, stretching across Counties Tyrone and Londonderry. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Sperrins offer a sense of wildness and solitude increasingly rare in modern Europe.

Unlike the dramatic peaks of Donegal or the Mournes, the Sperrins present gentler, rounded summits clothed in heather moorland. But their scale is impressive - over 40 peaks exceed 500 metres, and the range stretches for 40 miles from east to west.

Walking in the Sperrins

The Sperrins offer superb walking for all abilities:

  • Sawel Mountain (678m) - Highest peak, accessible summit walk
  • Sperrin Heritage Centre trails - Waymarked routes from the visitor centre
  • Glenelly Valley - Scenic valley walks
  • Barnes Gap - Mountain pass with panoramic views
  • Ulster Way - Long-distance route crosses the range

Dark Skies

The Sperrins have some of the darkest skies in Europe:

  • Minimal light pollution makes star-gazing spectacular
  • Davagh Forest designated a Dark Sky Park
  • Beaghmore Stone Circles atmospheric at night
  • Milky Way visible on clear nights

Gold & Heritage

The Sperrins have Ireland's richest gold deposits:

  • Gold has been found here for 4,000 years
  • Gold panning experiences available
  • Sperrin Heritage Centre tells the story
  • Ancient monuments scattered throughout
