Navan Fort, known in Irish as Emain Macha, stands as one of Ireland's most important archaeological and mythological sites. This ancient ceremonial capital of Ulster dates back over 2,000 years and was once the seat of the legendary Red Branch Knights, including the hero Cú Chulainn.

Archaeological Significance

Archaeological excavations have revealed a complex history spanning from the Late Bronze Age (around 700 BC) to the Iron Age. The most remarkable discovery was a massive timber structure dating to approximately 95 BC, measuring 40 meters in diameter. This enormous building was deliberately burned and covered with limestone and turf shortly after construction—suggesting elaborate ritualistic practices.

Mythology and the Ulster Cycle

Navan Fort features prominently in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology, serving as the royal capital where King Conchobar mac Nessa ruled. The legendary Red Branch Knights, Ireland's most famous warrior band, were based here, including the immortal hero Cú Chulainn. Stories of heroic deeds, tragic romances, and epic battles—including the famous Táin Bó Cúailnge—all centre on this ancient hilltop.

The Navan Centre & Fort

Today, the Navan Centre provides an excellent introduction to the site and its stories. The modern visitor centre features interactive exhibitions exploring both the archaeology and mythology of Emain Macha. Costumed guides bring ancient Ulster to life through storytelling and demonstrations of Iron Age crafts.

Visiting Information

Navan Fort is located approximately 3 kilometers west of Armagh City. The walk from the car park to the fort summit takes approximately 15-20 minutes along well-maintained paths. The site is particularly atmospheric at dawn or dusk, when mist often settles in the surrounding valleys.
