Ballycastle: Where the Antrim Coast Ends
At the northeastern tip of the Antrim coast, where the road from Belfast finally runs out of land, Ballycastle sits with quiet confidence. This isn't a tourist town in the manufactured sense—it's a genuine working community with a beautiful beach, traditional pubs, and the oldest fair in Ireland. That authenticity is precisely its appeal.
The Town and Beach
Ballycastle's diamond (main square) anchors a compact town of independent shops, traditional pubs, and excellent restaurants. The architecture is unpretentious but harmonious—this is a place that functions for its residents rather than performing for visitors, which makes it more pleasant for visitors as a result.
The beach stretches east from the harbour—a generous curve of golden sand backed by dunes, with Fair Head and Rathlin Island visible across the water. It's perfect for a morning walk, and on the rare hot days, swimming is excellent.
Gateway to Rathlin Island
The ferry to Rathlin Island departs from Ballycastle harbour—a 25-minute crossing to Ireland's northernmost inhabited island. Rathlin is famous for its seabird colonies (including puffins), its laid-back atmosphere, and being the place where Robert the Bruce allegedly watched a spider and gained inspiration to try again.
Day trips to Rathlin are easily arranged; those wanting deeper immersion can stay overnight in the island's guesthouses. The RSPB Seabird Centre at the West Light is spectacular during nesting season (April-July).
The Ould Lammas Fair
On the last Monday and Tuesday of August, Ballycastle transforms for the Ould Lammas Fair—a tradition dating to 1606 and the oldest fair in Ireland. Thousands gather for livestock sales, market stalls, street entertainment, and the traditional delicacies of "dulse and yellowman" (seaweed and honeycomb toffee). It's wonderfully traditional and refreshingly uncommercial.
